I’ve recently come to adore the sound of female indie singers, though indie music is not a definite style of music. It’s a type of music that calls to you when you’re sad, sparking the exact emotion you’re feeling. Easily recognizable through the melodic sound, adding a keyboard or violin, and well harmonized music, indie music is slowing taking over the industry and I can tell why. These three songs had me coming back from the second the chords started – and I definitely annoyed my roommates with how much I played them.
Zella Day – East of Eden
The second I listened to this song, I felt like I should be at a ’70s concert high and dancing with my eyes closed. This song gives off both a haunting and charming vibe expressing dreamy lyrics. As a sweet sounding song, I never expected the thump of a bass drop typical for dubstep as the chorus hit. “East of Eden” is catchy, to say the least, especially since I put it on repeat the second I found it.
Favorite lyrics: “Call me wild, drinking up the sunshine/Be my man and show me what it feels like”.
Halsey – Control
“Control” Is Halsey’s way of personifying her bipolar disorder, questioning who is in control in the depths of her mind. It’s hard to fight your own inner demons taking control of what we do and we forget that we can change that ourselves. Mysterious, sinister, and powerful sounding, this song only solidifies Halsey’s talent. Expressing a disorder is hard in itself and it just speaks to listeners on a deep level.
Favorite lyrics: “I’m grown familiar with villains that live in my head/They beg me to write them so they’ll never die when I’m dead”.
Ruelle – Monsters
There’s something about a woman’s charm, or so the saying goes. Some unexplainable, subtle draw that is impossible to resist. “Monsters” has it all: unique, upbeat, and charming balled into one song. Dark and electronic, Maggie Eckford, otherwise known as Ruelle, mesmerizes her audience with haunting harmonies and melodies that stay inside your head for days. Well, I can definitely account for that.
Favorite lyrics: “We never shoot to stun/We’re kings of the killing, we’re out for blood/We’ll take em one by one”.
