It’s mid-June, which means summer is in full swing. Last week the days seemed extremely long and humid (more than usual), leaving me not in the best mood. In need of a quick pick me up, I scrolled through my Spotify and put together these three vivacious tunes that instantly lifted my spirits. So go on a relaxing walk or drive and blast these songs. Just leave it to the three current queens of electro/indie pop to lift your spirits.
- “Hotter Than Hell” by Dua Lipa
21 year-old English singer and model, Dua Lipa, really surfaced to the scene at the top of 2017 and is quickly becoming one of the best new female pop stars. Dua recently released her debut album which is full of bops, and with singles like “Hotter Than Hell”, she is climbing her way up the charts.
“Hotter Than Hell” portrays a love interest, who, Dua questions if that person craves her. This portrayal is particularly intriguing because she is shown in a dominant light, which goes against what is typically expected in media narratives around budding romance. The intro is slow yet slick. Once Dua’s smooth vocals hit the forefront and combine with an infectious dance beat, you can’t help but groove and sing along. Dua delivers a charming track with a spur of girl power.
2. “Green Light” by Lorde
Despite the song’s true meaning of heartbreak, Lorde gets everyone on their feet for her first single off of the long awaited Melodrama which was just released.
“Green Light” has moody undertones featuring a lone piano and a soft kick drum but its explosive chorus brings nothing but glee. Her vocals are theatrical and raw, I wouldn’t expect anything different from a Lorde single.
Lorde responded to comments regarding her upbeat track with such a melancholy meaning by saying, “I realized this is that drunk girl at the party dancing around crying about her ex-boyfriend who everyone thinks is a mess. That’s her tonight and tomorrow she starts to rebuild. And that’s the song for me.” This song takes a positive spin to the heartbreak that everyone dreads.
3. “Sensations” by Elohim
It’s absolutely impossible to not indulge in L.A. pop singer, Elohim’s light and bouncy synth track, “Sensations”. This single was released as a remix a few days prior to her debut album in May of 2016, but I recently discovered it.
Elohim plays with the darker side of electro-pop with her instrumentals in this song specifically, but breaks that tone with a sweeter sounding chorus. The liberating and exuberant layered chants of “Yeah, these sensations are so sensational”, make the song even more prone to be stuck in your head. It’s the ideal song for a long car ride with the windows down.
