The year of 2016 has been a whirlwind for everyone. From the presidential election, to the full legalization of gay marriage, to Harambe, and even to new Star Wars and Harry Potter movies. If you’re looking for a truly incredible way to send off this year Decadence is it. Decadence is located in the mile high city of Denver and takes place on December 30th and 31st at the Denver Convention Center. It becomes an enchanted metropolis housing an adult-only playground full of breath-taking production, performers in costume, sound and lights guaranteed to put you in a trance, and, oh yeah, some of the biggest names in electronic music. Global Dance has done it again by creating an event guaranteed to give 2016 a massive send-off while ringing in 2017 properly with America’s biggest New Year’s Eve celebration.
This year, Decadence is featuring some of the biggest names in electronic music such as Tiesto, The Chainsmokers, Flume, Disclosure, and Marshmello. Heavy bass music will also be represented with major players in the game such as Snails, RL Grime, Baauer, and Bassnectar. With all of these great artists and more it’s hard to remember that music is only a small piece of what makes attending Decadence an experience like no other. Speaking from personal experience, there’s an unexplainable energy in the air as you walk into The City of Decadence; it’s electric. You can feel the excitement and see it on the faces of the people around you. For two days, you’re in this playground where you’re free to laugh, dance, and be yourself surrounded by thousands of like-minded people, all united by a love for this music and culture. Decadence 2016 promises a New Year’s Eve worth talking about.
Pro Tips For Decadence 2016
- AVOID UBER SURCHARGE
Last year I left New Year’s Eve/New Year’s day around 4am. Uber began their surcharge at 2:30am. For a ten mile ride I paid nearly $150 due to the surcharge. If you aren’t aware of what that is, here’s a link with an explanation. Meanwhile many taxis lined the streets; taxis do not surcharge. Long story short, plan to leave early to beat the surcharge or go old school and get a taxi. Here’s a screenshot of my ride last year.
2. DRINK LOTS OF WATER
Denver is the mile high city, it sits 5,280 feet above sea level. If you’re not from the area or from somewhere of similar height it is very easy for you to experience elevation sickness. The simple cure to this is drinking lots of water, especially at an EDM festival where you’re bound to be dancing for hours on end. CAMELBACKS ARE ALLOWED, but they music be empty when you enter! (All Vibedration bags are currently 25% as well!)
Decadence features two main stages and a Silent Disco. If you’ve never done Silent Disco, this is the time to try it, here’s a video of what it looks like. Music is played through the headphones and there a multiple channels to listen to, which results in everyone dancing in a truly organic way. Decadence also features incredible art installations, plenty of merch for the artists and festival, and even “chill spots” of light up trees which you can sit under. Wander around, there’s plenty to experience. This map shows last year’s setup, I expect this year will be similar.
4. PREPARE FOR THE WEATHER
Typical of EDM festivals, festival goers tend to wear very little clothing. While that works wonderfully indoor due to the heat from dancing and the number of people, this festival is happening in December in Denver. Here’s a link to the current forecast putting the temp around 25 degrees each night when the festival lets out. While you may not be planning to be outside for long, it is very hard for Uber (and Lyft, and Taxi) drivers to get to you and you will most likely be waiting outside for a good minute. At the very least bring a jacket and beanie! This festival does have a coat check area so no need to worry about carrying the extra clothing around all night.
5. LATE NIGHT FOOD
This list gives the best late night food options in Denver. I am unsure of what will be open New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day (night), so definitely look before you travel. Taco Bell and McDonald’s are also pretty close to downtown. In addition to this, here is a full list of food open New Year’s Day the next day which includes some fantastic hangover options, brunch, and even places with bottomless mimosas. Food is important, especially before and after a festival on a holiday weekend when it is questionable what will be open, especially if you are a visitor to the city.
Prep for this unforgettable night properly by getting familiar with The Official Decadence Colorado 2016 playlist on Spotify.
