First and foremost, it is important to point out that I am a born and raised Floridian who currently resides in South Carolina where it hasn’t snowed since 2010.
Northerners like to scoff at Southerners for our over-excitement about snow. The reality of it is that the entire Southern world shuts down when the first snowflake falls, possibly due to things like the fact that the capital city in which I reside has a grand total of nine snowplows.
Regardless, between refreshing the news websites with school and business closings, stepping outside every five minutes looking to the sky for some white fluff, checking and re-checking the weather forecast, and then finally having your wintery dreams come to fruition, the experience of a snow day can be an absolutely delightful roller coaster.
What better way to enjoy a snow day than to reflect on it with some of your favorite jams?
In looking for the soundtrack to my snow day, I went through the few albums sitting next to my turntable, and so the following songs come from my 10 most recently played records:
1. “Your Seasons Stay the Same” – Young Statues
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKVdSro_5r4]
I’m from Florida. What are seasons?
2. “Tiny Raindrop” – Balance and Composure
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7npsekc1c8]
It started as a tiny bit of rain around noon, and then slowly progressed to freezing rain. We all looked to the sky hoping those tiny raindrops would turn to snowflakes.
3. “Get Ready” – Sublime
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxxukELEfo8]
By 8pm, there was a thick layer of ice covering everything, begging for snow to fall and stick. The “my body is ready” meme would be appropriate at this point.
4. “The Battle for Clear Sight” – Larry and His Flask
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0JZ4zbIB4U]
The sleet had finally turned to snow around 9pm. While the rest of the state had stocked up on bread and milk, I had laughed thinking snowpocalypse wouldn’t actually happen. Once I realized how wrong I was, I obviously had to drive to the nearest gas station to get a case of Yuengling (priorities, hello?). Something I didn’t consider, however, was how difficult it is to see while driving in the snow.
5. “Don’t Stop” – Fleetwood Mac
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SybgWaQy7_c]
It was finally snowing, and it better not quit now.
6. “Go Outside” – Cults
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPKbG1CCLx8]
Um, it is a beautiful winter wonderland out there… why are you still inside?
7. “Back to Bed” – Lydia
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExtNNSA3Qok]
What better way to crash than after the euphoria of having your snow fantasies come true?
8. “Cats and Dogs” – The Head and the Heart
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLLvocsmnNU]
Dogs in the snow is one of the cutest things ever, so I am very lucky to have two small snow frolickers. If you’re more of a cat person, I have also been feeding a stray recently, and set her up with a makeshift shelter using an umbrella and dog bed. It was delightful to wake in the morning and see that she, with snow-covered whiskers, had made it through the night.
9. “The Sun” – The Naked and Famous
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAIiS5n8phg]
Okay so learning new things here – apparently snow makes the world blindingly bright. The sun has now come out and I will be very displeased if it melts all of my fun.
10. “Hung Me Out to Dry” – Young Statues
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inAKA63cXqw]
Oh yeah, and since snow is essentially frozen water, my entire life is soaking wet now. It’s okay, who needs dry carpet anyway?
11. Winter Forever – Seahaven
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJQI0AqZGLQ]
Had to add this album on at the end, because pretty please?
