Music is limitless and for singer/songwriter, Alex Jackson, and knowing that he has only one life to live makes him determined to explore all music has to offer. With a new release, The Bedroom EP, Jackson is not ready to be classified in any one genre.
Opportunity presents itself daily. Jackson is currently taking piano lessons and is grateful for his music education so far. Jackson, who has had formal training in music, says, “I take what I want from the things I learn. I’m a very free-spirited person when it comes to being taught something. I will take what I want from it and apply the things I choose.” Creativity lies in the way you use what you have learned to make your own sound. His music is straight from the heart, cohesive, and resonates with fans that relate to songs about life. He recently opened for American Idol finalist, Crystal Bowersox on the Kent Stage, in front of one of his largest audiences so far.
Music changes the mood. Jackson is a music lover first and is drawn to individual sounds that appeal to him. In his own music he disclosed, “My favorite genre of music is not acoustic, folk, or whatever it is people want to categorize me as. That’s not my favorite kind of music. My favorite kind of music goes far beyond that.” So what is Jackson’s favorite kind of music? “I can’t say, it changes all the time with whatever mood I’m in.” Like most of us, the songs we listen to reflect how we are feeling at the time and can cover a wide variety of genres.
It’s all you. As a solo artist, Jackson enjoys the creative control, but discovered there is a progression to songwriting. In the beginning, he wrote songs to mirror the music he liked. It was not until much later that Jackson learned to write what he felt based on his experiences. He says, “When I first started playing music, it was because I wanted to be like the people I listened to. I wasn’t writing because I wanted to write and I wanted to get something out. I wanted to write because I wanted to be like these people…. I can’t believe (The Bedroom EP) took that long to get six songs, but I’m glad I took that long, because toward the end I did start writing for the fun of it and to get stuff out. I think those songs at the end are my favorites because (of that).” Through trial and error, as well as dogged determination, Jackson found that writing songs from his heart was more satisfying. His expansive vocal range and perfectly balanced rhythms make The Bedroom EP one of the most compelling records around.
Music has its ups and downs. On September 28, 2015, Jackson posted to Facebook that, “Lately, I’ve been more excited about making music than I have ever been.” With the new album finished, Jackson is eager to move on to his next project. The future is a new project with rap artist Paradox (Itua Ikuenobe) called Artificial Intelligence. It features a powerhouse of thinkers that combine the talents of both artists. The duo is currently garnering attention with the release of their new video, Batman & Robin. The record has been written and is in the recording stage now. Fans can look forward to a fresh new sound in the rap style of Jackson and Ikuenobe when the album is finished.
