You never forget your first. I missed seeing Anberlin on my 18th birthday in 2007, and Warped Tour 6 months later, so October 14, 2008 was my very first time seeing Anberlin. My very first semester of college. My very first time living in the city (Oakland). My very first show ever, at the ripe old age of 18. The very minute Anberlin stepped on stage and started playing, I was just in disbelief. It felt so surreal that these people singing and playing my favorite songs that I had been listening to through my computer, ipod, and cd’s for the last year and a half or more were in the same room as me. I sang my heart out along to every word until I lost my voice, then kept on singing. Anberlin was there for me during some of the roughest times of my life, but they also brought me happiness through just being who they are as people outside the stage setting, and by bringing me to long lasting friends.
At my very first show, Christian paused and smiled for me when he saw I was trying to take a picture of him. I will never forget that pink lighted picture with Christian’s signature smile. Now, he treats me like an old friend every time I see him. Nate has remembered me even if the last time I saw him was a year ago. When I saw Stephen’s now more well-known side project Anchor & Braille in 2009, he was so humble that he didn’t even mention he was in Anberlin. In addition to their lyrics, which is what initially set them apart from anyone else for me to dub them as my favorite band for life only a month after discovering their music, it’s the little things like this that the members of Anberlin do as normal, down to earth people that will make me keep them in my heart forever.
