Those of you who frequent the AbsolutePunk.net music forum should be familiar with a phenomena that has happened twice before: The Fantasy Band Draft. Ran by MEB Managing Editor Jack Appleby, the two fantasy drafts were wildly successful endeavors, earning over 100,000 combined page views, sparking great music discussion and getting the attention of several important figures, including The Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon. We at MindEqualsBlown.net have decided to bring you pick-by-pick coverage of The 3rd Annual Fantasy Band Draft, as well as spotted analysis of the bands that will form from them.
This is our sixth special section on the draft, spotlighting picks #26-30.
This is already one of the fan favorites the draft. Rookie Weiss is one of the most popular acoustic musicians around the Ap.net league, so this late first-round pick comes as a no-brainer, especially with Weiss’ productive year. The coach has claimed Weiss is one of three vocalists on the team. This leaves some other coaches wondering if he is gunning for too much. Weiss also would have likely slipped to the second or even third round, making this pick a bit of a stretch.
PROS:Tons of cred. CONS: Three vocalists? Is there enough mic to go around?
Strange move here from the coach. After a strong performance his first season coaching, the man behind this team chose to take a year off. With his return he chose the frontman of one of the world’s most popular groups to fill a rhythm role? Followill isn’t the most gifted guitarist, he’s a singer first in foremost. This must be a move to use Followill’s songwriting ability. Even with that, this move is puzzling, even for a credible coach.
PROS: His sex is on fire. CONS: He could use somebody.
It’s a bit shocking that ‘Ye slipped this far. After the universally praised My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and a gold medal showing last season, a top five pick was anticipated. Rumor has it that his new label as a safe pick hurt his stock and pushed him away from prospective coaches. A pissed off Kanye is a productive Kanye though, so look for West to channel this slip into a hell of a band.
PROS: Another evil genius. CONS: Can be a total, total asshole.
This goes right into the category of major stretch with Owens and Taulbee. While The Weeknd is picking up a lot of steam recently, he is extremely new to the scene and a rookie to the league. His coach may have wanted to establish Tesfaye as the leader of the team, but I can’t help but feel this pick could have been saved one or two (more likely three) rounds.
PROS: Darkhorse for Rookie Of The Year. CONS: Unpronounceable last name.
This picked received near unanimous hate, with many coaches around the league laughing at the pop-punk icon being a first round pick. While he is one of the more gifted guitarists and more energetic performers from one of the biggest bands on the scene, his team barely squeaked into the middle of the pack last year. This strong roleplayer will be looked at as his band’s star now, which may not bode well with the judges.
PROS: Experience that inspired many other draft picks. CONS: Sure doesn’t seem too popular in the first round.
