Those of you who frequent the AbsolutePunk.net music forum should be familiar with a phenomena that has happened twice before: The Fantasy Band Draft. Ran by MEB Managing Editor Jack Appleby, the two fantasy drafts were wildly successful endeavors, earning over 100,000 combined page views, sparking great music discussion and getting the attention of several important figures, including The Gaslight Anthem’s Brian Fallon. We at MindEqualsBlown.net have decided to bring you full coverage of The 3rd Annual Fantasy Band Draft, as well as spotted analysis of the bands and interviews with selected musicians.
After being drafted by AP.net user FallOutWeeze in the first round, Bayside vocalist Anthony Raneri dropped in to talk to us about his selection, his new bandmates, and who he’d like to work with in the future.
MEB: Anthony, you were selected #15 overall in the Fantasy Band Draft. Can you believe such an honor?
Anthony: I am absolutely blown away by such a great honor. I have to say, there are so many talented musicians in our scene and to have been selected in the first round like that is pretty rad.
Your coach has paired you with Jordan Pundik or New Found Glory and Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day. Think you could make some tunes with these guys?
Without a doubt. Jordan and Billie are obviously some of the best in the game and have both influenced me a lot. i think we could make sweet music together.
Who are some musicians in real life you’d love to work with?
I’ve always been a big Ben Folds fan and whenever this question comes up he’s the first person that comes to mind. I love piano driven music. I think it gives you a lot of angles that you don’t have with a guitar. My piano skills are pretty limited so usually what I write on piano winds up getting transposed for guitar before it is heard by the public. Working with Ben and his insane melodic and technical skills would be a fun new thing for me. (Ed’s note: Ben Folds was also selected in the fantasy band draft to work with Thomas Mars of Phoenix).
If you weren’t with Bayside, what kind of music could you see yourself doing?
I love being in a punk band. In Bayside, we’re all proud to have stayed true to our original goals and mindset as far as our music goes. At least at this point in my life, I couldn’t see my main focus being anything but hard, fast and catchy punk rock.
