MEB staff writer Alek Wiltbank recently got the chance to interview Modern Baseball and ask them a few questions. Their guitarist and singer Brendan Lukens was able to take some time out to answer our inquiries about how people have responded to the record and where the future of Modern Baseball lies. The review of their latest release Sports can be found here.
MEB: So to start it off, what is your name and what part do you play in Modern Baseball?
Brendan Lukens: My name is Brendan and I sing and play guitar.
You latest release Sports was released back in November. How has the album been received since then?
It has been received very well! We have gotten a ton of great reviews and press, while we also sold out of our first pressing! We honestly never expected any of this and could not be happier that so many people are enjoying it.
If you had to describe your sound (and you do, this is an interview damnit!), how would you do so?
We hear a lot of people say that we remind them of Say Anything, The Weakerthans, and The Front Bottoms. We couldn’t ask to be compared to any other bands.
Many of the songs reference social media. Why did you choose to write about a topic which generally isn’t discussed in music?
I think that is something that is such a big part of our lives that it just made sense to write about it. It was never really planned, just sort of happened.
What is your songwriting process like?
Well Jake [Ewald] and I are the main songwriters. We both write separately in our own free time and then show them to everyone when we are finished. We usually will not write for a very long time, just because of our busy schedules, then write a slew of songs in one sitting. I think it’s great because of how relaxed the process is.
What is your most memorable show/show moment?
For me the most memorable show was definitely our record release show. We had it at the house where most of the band lives and it was packed. We got to play with a bunch of awesome bands who we love. All of our friends in Philly came out along with a bunch of people who came from out of the area. A few of them drove three hours to see the show! One of the best days I can remember.
What are your musical (and non-musical) influences?
Motion City Soundtrack, Say Anything and Dashboard Confessional are my main musical influences. I am also very into books and movies. I am super into sci-fi and dinosaur movies, which I reference in a few songs. Long live Jurassic Park.
What would be your dream tour?
I think for me it would be going on tour with The Gaslight Anthem, The Menzingers and Into It. Over It. Though I know Ian, our bassist, keeps saying he would love to tour with U2, Journey, Rick Springfield and Foreigner. I would be down for either one.
What does the future of Modern Baseball look like?
So far it looks incredible, we have a ton of awesome shows and festivals coming up. We also plan on going on a very large tour this summer, as well as a small tour during our spring break. We are all also very excited to go back into the studio late this spring to start recording our second full length, which will be our first release on Run For Cover Records! Overall just stoked.
Thanks for taking the time to talk to us, and good luck to you.
