At the beginning of summer the Canadian based 5-piece Structures released their debut EP All Of The Above (which we reviewed here). Drummer Andrew McEnaney was kind enough to speak with us and let us know what the band is up to. Make sure to catch them on their upcoming tour in August with The Holly Springs Disaster and Architects.
Mind Equals Blown: Would you care to give some insight on the writing for the new album?
Structures: We havent technically started “writing” yet. Spee Brendon and I will usually get together and write sections then tie them together to make the songs feel and sound like a whole. For the new album though, we will be writing songs as a whole instead of sections like we did on our EP. Right now were just touring as much as we can and trying to meet as many people as possible so writing has taken the back seat for now.
MEB: Any label talk?
S: There has been label talk, yes. We are waiting for something suitable to come to us instead of jumping at the first offer we got. Hopefully we can figure something out soon!
MEB: How have recent tours been?
S: Tours have been great. We just got home from a month long US tour with Within the Ruins, The World We Knew and Woe Of Tyrants. We love being on the road and meeting new people/seeing new places every day. We’ve been privileged to be able to tour with a few bands we grew up listening to so were all very grateful and stoked on that. We leave for Vancouver at the end of the month to start The Holly Springs Disaster’s farewell tour with Architects, very awesome.
MEB: What would you say are your biggest influences as a band?
S: Our biggest influences? Probably creating something new. Being different than whats going on in our local scene/the music scene in general was a huge inspiration while we were writing our EP and always continues to make us want to be doing something unique.
MEB: What differences can listeners expect in the future releases?
S: We definitely have grown a lot since the writing process/recording process of “All of the Above”. We were young when we wrote that, 17-19 years old actually. Now that we have toured with some amazing musicians and have learned a lot about ourselves and the music we want to create, listeners can expect something more mature and developed. Our musical tastes are so different from one another so there will be many elements in the next album, were stoked!
MEB: When not playing in Structures you are…
S: We all love hanging out with our friends and going to shows around town. We usually hang out together if were not practicing/writing. Some of the guys have girlfriends so they hang out with them too.
MEB: What would be your biggest guilty band?
S: My personal guilty band would probably be Tegan and Sara. Everyone else would probably agree with me haha.
MEB: You are stranded on a desert island. What book, movie and album do you have with you?
S: I would probably bring “getting off a deserted island – for idiots”, a pirated copy of Inception because Im still wrapping my head around that one and because it came out 2 days ago, and hands down, the “Cast Away” soundtrack.
MEB: If you had the chance to pick three bands to tour with, to form the ultimate show, who would they be?
S: Thats a tough one, uhhh…probably Pantera, Rage Against the Machine, and Van Halen. We would be headlining, of course.
MEB: If you could suggest one band for our readers to check out, Who would it be?
S: Without a doubt, our best friends in Counterparts. Prophets is one of our most favorite albums ever and they deserve everyones attention because they are amazing musicians and even better people, go check them out!
MEB: Closing Statements?
S: Thanks for the support and taking the time to read this interview, check us out at www.myspace.com/wearestructures as well as the facebook page! Thanks for the interview Drew!
