The Scoop: Cape Town progressive metal Mesmer have released a new single entitled “Chapters: Twenty Years After”.
The Spin: Mesmer formed in 2012 with goal of bringing progressive hardcore to the disenfranchised metalheads of South Africa. Unfortunately, their formation was at the same time when the South African metal scene encountered rapid degradation and was relegated to playing host to brutal death metal bands. Two years on, and the scene is slowly opening up to melody-based metal bands.
Mesmer are spearheading the invasion of melody-infused metal as they combine elements of melodic hardcore, post-hardcore and progressive metal to create a hard-hitting combination of needling guitar riffs, chugging melody, blistering bass riffs and crashing drums. Harsh unclean vocals from Christian Mills re juxtaposed next to soaring, post-hardcore inspired clean vocals from Kyle Puller. Under the guidance of Alex Silva from Villa Studios, in Kalk Bay, the song has a production quality which rivals that off bands signed to major labels like Rise Records or Fearless Records.
“Chapters: Twenty Years After” is an example of the breath of life that the South African metal scene needs to shake it out of the restrictive manacles of brutal death metal.
