The Scoop: Guitarist and back-up vocalist Skylar Sarkis has quit Such Gold. AP reports from the Cleveland kickoff show of their tour with A Wilhelm Scream and The Flatliners, that lead vocalist Ben Kotin announced the split with Skylar on stage. “Skylar just quit the band,” Ben reportedly informed the audience, “but we are gonna keep going as a four piece.”
Below is a video taken at the show of a brand new song, with frontman Ben now on guitar:
UPDATE: Such Gold has tweeted, following some inaccurate reports of the singer (not the guitarist) quitting the band, the following: “we’re playing as a 4 piece and we love it. Ben writes a lot of the guitar in Such Gold and he wants to be able to play!” and “our singer has not left the band, he’s just playing guitar and singing. He writes most the music, along with Nate.”
The Spin: The blogosphere is currently a mess with fans and journalists alike wondering what will become of the now four piece punk/hardcore act from Rochester, NY. With the successful release of full-length Misadventures last summer and the promise of new material this year, the loss of Skylar might be a bigger blow than they are letting on. Considering their unique thrash punk style, Ben’s vocal energy might be compromised by simultaneously playing those brutal riffs.
This also begs the question of what might come of the side project, Taking Meds, that Ben, Skylar, and Such Gold bassist Steel Wolf Markson started earlier this year. If it were over an issue with Ben/Steel Wolf and Skylar, one would assume he also wouldn’t carry on with Taking Meds. But if he does, that then opens it up to interpretation that the reason may have been beef with other members or something different entirely.
The Question: Will Ben be able to balance strong vocals with impeccable guitar work? How will the songwriting be impacted by the loss of Skylar? Will they end up replacing him, or possibly breaking up altogether? Let us know in the comments below!
