Every so often I like to attend a show of someone I’ve never or have hardly listened to. I was familiar with a few songs by Tyler the Creator but haven’t ever sat down and gave one his albums an honest listen; however, I was a fan of Loiter Squad and judging from clips that they’d play, it looked to me like he could put on one hell of a live performance. I was right.
The set was festooned with a very large picture of Vladimir Putin’s face withe the word golf on it. Why? Well, why not? The show began with Taco bursting on stage and up to the DJ booth to play a few songs. The cheers of the crowd prevented me from realizing right away that the song playing was by Drake. This was quickly followed by Dr. Dre‘s “Next Episode” and a few more hits. While part of me wondered if you could call turning Stage AE into a glorified club counts as an opening act, I have also never seen anyone do this before and Taco’s onstage antics were about as entertaining as any opener I’ve ever seen.
Then Tyler the Creator burst onto stage with his hype man and performed everything from “Yonkers” to “VCR.” There were his old hits as well as a few new ones all with some comedy sprinkled in between. In fact, the boys from Odd Future were so funny in between songs that the breaks may just have been the best part of the show. Selling the crowd water from the booth while being showered with fitted caps and underwear made up for the relatively brief runtime of the show.
Tyler the Creator’s onstage style is contagious. The energy he exhumes had the crowd at a fever pitch from start to finish. One moment in particular he wanted everyone to keep still until the bass dropped – this proved to be easier said than done. An uncommon thing a concert like this, rarely do you ever see a performance by someone who not only has a talent for the music but for showmanship as well. This was a short, but sweet concert that if you’re either a fan of the artist or just in the mood to see a hell of a show you should definitely check out.
