Recently-turned-country songstress Cassadee Pope really has made a name for herself in her new genre. Am I still sad that it looks like Hey Monday isn’t going to be making a comeback anytime soon? Of course I am. But Cassadee has proven to her fans that she just might be better off on her own than she ever was in a group and her newest single”I Am Invincible” definitely shows how much she has grown in her solo career.
“I Am Invincible” is probably one of the closest songs to her work in her old band with heavy pop rock elements and slightly less twang than her tracks on her 2013 debut album Frame By Frame. Power guitars paired with her soaring vocals singing about how we are not the struggles that have been thrown at us plays into the empowering anthem trend that female artists are highly focusing on in today’s popular music. Not that those pro-girl power songs have diminished or anything, but Pope successfully adds to that ever growing playlist of positive tracks and doesn’t forget to showcase vocal range to remind us she was worthy of the crown on her season of The Voice.
Lyrically, “I Am Invincible” is a power anthem with a purpose. Pope combines simple songwriting tactics with a handful of visual and, dare I say, slightly emo-esque lines (“broken glass inside/won’t cut through me…cracks run through these walls/but they still stand strong/oh, heart covered in scars…”) to pack a punch on the listener. Each chorus seems to get stronger and stronger vocally, but the bridge is where she really commands our attention with verses like “nothin’ gonna make me break or shatter/no one’s gonna tell me I don’t matter, no/I won’t let you.” It’s very clear that she is ready to work as hard as she can to prove her value, which is a common theme among the female musician community, and she’s not ready to go down without a fight.
It’s obvious that Pope is trying to tailor her music to both old and new fans and has gained positive reviews for the blending of both rock and country musical elements together in “I Am Invincible.” The single pretty much has all of the makings of the pop rock style she used to have but now wrapped up in a pretty country girl present. She reminds us that we not only have the power to be “invincible,” but we can also be “unbreakable,” “unstoppable,” “a hero,” and “a diamond cut to last” when rise from adversity “like a phoenix from the ash”
