It’s been a decent sized break from 2011’s Night Shades for Cobra Starship, but their recent release “Never Been In Love” is bound to get you back up on your feet and belting the lyrics at the top of your lungs like they never took a break to get married (oh wait, that was just Gabe Saporta). When Saporta met featured Icona Pop while working on the remix for their monster hit “I Love It (feat. Charli XCX), he must’ve known it would be a match made in collaboration heaven because their product is everything that pop music should inspire to be.
“Never Been In Love” is a straight up fun song (picture a disco-themed roller skating rink scene with cheesy disco balls everywhere). Light hearted drumming and pianos combined with sing-songy vocals and a happy-go-lucky dance beat easily makes you want to add it to your party playlist. Yes, it’s a love song, but it’s got an anthem-like quality to it that the overall theme gets lost in how much excitement is occurring when you listen to it (AKA it won’t make single peeps feel crappy about being single). Cobra Starship has a knack for creating musical love children with their featured artists and “Never Been In Love” has very apparent qualities of both them and Icona Pop.
If it wasn’t obvious in it’s title, “Never Been In Love” is quite literally about that joyous feeling that you get when you meet the right person. While ultimately being a love song in the most obvious ways possible, it’s also a ray of hope for anyone who feel like they just can’t catch a break in the love department. Saporta croons on and on about the concept of “never being in love” before the love of his life walked in and changed his world forever (a dedication to his wife perhaps?) using differently worded verses. He pretty much reassures the listeners that no matter how many shitty relationships you live through, none of them will matter once ‘The One’ steps in.
Despite simplistic lyrics, “Never Been In Love” is certainly not a terrible getting-back-into-the-swing-of-things single to start off with. It’s got all of the classic elements that makes Cobra Starship who they are as a band and truly shows that they know what works for them musically. Their collaboration with Icona Pop is just as killer as the other pairings that they’ve had in the past. They’ve definitely got another hit on their hands.
