Single Review: Coldplay’s “Midnight”

By Craig Roxburgh · On February 26, 2014

Coldplay has always been a band that blows me away with each song that they release. When I heard that they had released a new song called “Midnight”, I was jumping around like a little kid. I envisioned some fantastical alternative rock gem that was a continuation of the Mylo Xyloto years.

Except that was far from what I heard. At first “Midnight” sounded intriguing, like it could be promising. Maybe it was going to be a synthed-out version of “Trouble” or “Yellow”. As the song progressed, my hopes were slowly crushed. I was waiting for Chris Martin’s vocals to come soaring in eventually but that never happened. It just maintained a dreary and monotonous sound and it sounds like a bad dream-pop parody of a Bon Iver song.

This is a song that shall be added to the “Music To Kill Myself By” playlist. If this is what a future Coldplay album could sound like then I am seriously disappointed. I truly hope this is just one bad single off an album that will blow us all away. Fingers crossed.
