The Fearless Records band For All Those Sleeping has been making their presence in the metalcore scene since their debut record Cross Your Fingers in 2010. Since the 2012 release of their sophomore album Outspoken, the band has gained recognition for their captivating hardcore sound. Now, with the news of their third full-length album Incomplete Me to be released in late June, this is the band’s chance to step away from metalcore generalities and shine with their individual skills and talents, which they have already begun to prove with their first single “Crosses”.
As soon as this track starts, it is clear that For All Those Sleeping mean business. The very heavy and direct instrumentals carry out the harsh tempo, automatically catching the listener’s attention. Addicting breakdowns pulse dramatically and amplify the tone. For All Those Sleeping hold a new dominance over their forceful instrumentals in “Crosses”, showing vast improvement to look forward to in Incomplete Me.
Another element to complement the violent drum beats and slaying guitar riffs is the fierce unclean vocals. The intense synchronization adds overwhelming power to every syllable of the lyrics. The growling screams of “Nothing matters but the voice inside” presents the chilling mood. The lyrical focus of this single also is another strong point that the band seems to be improving on. The words are more direct (“I am my cross to bear”), but display vivid ideas and emotions to enhance the tone of the track and make connections with listeners.
For All Those Sleeping’s previous album Outspoken strongly showcased the band’s use of clean vocals, but wavered between exciting and dull. They have no problem captivating listeners with the clean vocals on “Crosses”, however. The clean singer’s vocals are solid and remarkably fresh to hear. The transition from chugging riffs to a catchy and spirited melody is evenly split and has an equal presence on the track. This method gives an exciting sneak peek to the band’s growth on Incomplete Me.
Overall, “Crosses” sounds like it is the beginning of a new era for For All Those Sleeping. With this single they prove that they have what it takes to make a name for themselves in the metalcore genre. If Incomplete Me continues on this track of growth from the band, it will be exciting to see where they go from here.
