Confession: I’ve never really been able to get into Taking Back Sunday. I always thought they were about as engaging as a cane toad. Their 2012 co-headliner with New Found Glory in 2012 didn’t assuage my misgivings about their music. I’m not a TBS fan at all so the fact that I really like this song probably means it’s bloody good. I can’t help but sing along when the chorus kicks in and Adam Lazarra is all “You feel sick, sick, sick/Be-in’ kept in the daaaark/You know you never stood a cha-ance/You know you never stood a cha-ance/Coz it’s that same, dark, place, where you get torn apart/You know you never stood a cha-ance/You know you never stood a cha-ance.” Damn, that’s a hell of a catchy chorus and holy crap, those are some dark lyrics. Still, it’s Taking Back Sunday. They aren’t exactly the happiest band going around. You want uplifting? Go see The Ghost Inside sometime.
Anyway, “Stood a Chance” is a heart-kicker. The guitars are pumping, the drums are upbeat, there are a few little slow-down-and-build-up-again moments that every rock band is contractually obliged to put in every second song they write and the whole thing wraps up in an instant with a quick drum fill. This ending is somewhat unfulfilling, leaving you wanting more. You expect to hear a big, gradual slow-down finish, but perhaps that’s the clever thing about it, because you’ll instantly hit the replay button as soon as it wraps up.
In short, I’m not a TBS fan by any stretch of the imagination and I like “Stood a Chance”. Whether that means the song is so sublimely brilliant that it can convert a skinny metalhead from the wrong side of the tracks to Team Lazarra or the song is so far removed from TBS’s previous work that it renders them almost unrecognisable is up for debate, but I’m betting it’s the former. Don’t take my word for it, though. Listen to “Stood a Chance” for yourself here. If you like it, buy Happiness Is when it comes out on March 18.
