Melding together members of Into It. Over It., Owen and Loose Lips Sink Ships, the thoughtfulness of moderately noodley alt-rock topped with quite soothing yet confident vocals doesn’t feel like a huge leap for the members making it up – but this track definitely feels like a separate venture, at least from the ears of a casual IIOI and American Football fan. A bit mellow but still ripe with summery guitar licks and a catchy introduction, “Concession Speech Writer” is a strong first entry from Their/They’re/There‘s upcoming EP.
There’s a bit of what I’d refer to as an influence on the track akin to bands like You Blew It! and Dikembe in a musically and technically pushing sense without turning this into something unlistenable in the process. The waves of wandering melodies that poke in and around Evan Weiss’ smooth vocals make for a quite lush experience without taking the focus off of either in the process – all without mentioning the backdrop created by the rhythm section. Whether it’s off-kilter cymbal accents or the subdued, snare-driven base to the verses, the drums add to the wandering notion of the track, while the bass rounds out the vibe with enough swagger to not get lost in the mix.
While there’s certainly some pedigree attached to this release, it is not entirely unfounded to consider this a bit of an under the radar release. In that thought though, “Concession Speech Writer” should only heighten the buzz this project is getting, as well as furthering interest in the rest of this self-titled EP as it releases on Record Store Day.
