Summer is here, folks! A season that to me is also known as “Yellowcard season.” There really isn’t much quite like blasting Ocean Avenue on a long summer car ride with friends in the backseat and the windows down. There’s just something about that combination of that violin and Ryan Key’s soaring hooks that exudes summer and when I saw the title of the band’s new single “Always Summer,” well I just couldn’t wait to press play.
“Always Summer” is everything to expect out of a Yellowcard single. Though not as fast-paced as I was expecting, the mid-range tempo of the track is still bouncy and fun and of course the chorus features another great vocal hook from Key.
Even though the title suggests a fun summer jam, “Always Summer” is quite a bit more than that. There is a certain amount of heart put into this track that allows it to outshine previous Yellowcard singles. And when another fantastic violin solo, courtesy of Sean Mackin, pops up in the bridge, the song really shines. With that being said, there is no mistaking that I will likely be quietly singing “I left home but there’s one thing that I still know/It’s always summer in my heart and in my soul” to myself all week long.
Leave it up to Yellowcard to kick off summer the right way. Now that both college and high school students are finishing up their semesters, Yellowcard chose the perfect moment to release a fun, heartfelt track that serves well enough to tide us anxious Yellowcard fans over until the follow-up to their stellar 2011 album When You’re Through Thinking, Say Yes is released later this year.
