Greetings and salutations, dear friends. It has been so many fortnights since we have last cavorted merrily about violins and summertime. I find myself vexed as to how it could possibly be that I have been so daft as to go so long without further hospitality. For those who were absent during my previous pontifications, I am Marlowe Edmund Blackwell VI, your host and poignant icon of this consortium of musical discussion. While known under many titles, I find myself favoring the designation of M.E.B Ape. This suits me well – humble, yet prolific with just a tinge of brash distinction, wouldn’t you say?
Long has been the day since I have offered a pittance of the inter-amalgamations of the cryptic latticework that is my thoughts on music. This has come just in time too, as both my harp players have fallen ill to something. It’s either that dreadful avian influenza or they’re entangled in their own self-deprecating, solipsistic quest for musical universalism. I too get things mixed up now and again. While they regain their fortitude, I have indulged in recent recorded works. I must admit, the collection I have for my phonograph is not as extensive as it could be. It’s become so frowned upon to have your music transcribed onto ivory, but I shan’t dwell on the past any longer.
So you may ask which auditory treat I have graced myself with while I’m not reading Tennyson. The recalcitrant musings of the latest ‘pop-punk’ sensation? No. The uncivilized antics of that fellow who dances like he is commanding an equine? I would say not; his form is appalling. Perhaps you might suggest I’ve listened to the gentlemen who request the horizon be brought forth to them. No, but my groundskeeper tells me good things. For this iteration my serfs and I will be going over the new work by the young squire who just did a most marvelous job of hosting Saturday Night Live. Their method of appraisal by six-word promulgation is once again here for your pleasure. Do enjoy.
Joe Ballard: “Experience gets better with every listen.”
Nick Niedzielski: “Step your game up, everyone else.”
Kaitlin Nichols: “Will definitely be an AOTY contender.”
