TOP 5 ALBUMS OF 2009
This is a bit unfair, being I knew this album would make it on my Top 5 list before it was ever released; But I did give this album a first listen with as little bias as possible…but sure enough, here it is. Between The Buried and Me are otherworldly when it comes to their sound. More often than not, people who don’t listen to metal, generally believe that it takes no talent. Show them BTBAM and watch as they realize how wrong they actually are. The Great Misdirect is another perfect combination of metal, jazz, polka, and whatever else you can think of. It has it all perfectly structured, fine tuned Goliath of an album. The debate over weather Colors or The Great Misdirect will continue for the next few years, there is no doubt that everyone agrees Between The Buried and Me are on the right track.
Every Time I Die finally perfects their sound with New Junk Aesthetic. Their heaviest and most complex album to date, ETID gives us exactly what we have been looking for all these years. Jordan Buckely and Andy Williams destroy this entire record with razor sharp riffs and dominating power chords. That, combined with Keith Buckley insane lyrics make for one hell of a record. Buckley again, proves he is one of the best lyricists of the genre, being both bizarre and intelligent “There’s nothing to see here/and nothing gazes back at us”. Full of breakdowns, powerful guitar work and a dash of the southern flow we grew to love on their previous albums, New Junk Aethetic seems to have it all. This is by far the best ETID album to date and will not disappoint, and they have no doubt achieved exactly what they were looking for.
Yup. Weird I know. I never, in my wildest dreams, thought a rap album wouldgrace my Top 5…let alone number 3. Ive never enjoyed it, until recently. A friend got me into Atmosphere, and weeventually saw him in concert. By the way, he stood outside and greeted every single one of us as we came in, thanking us for coming. Kick as dude, who really has heart. Anyway, Eyedea and Abilities opened for him and blew me away. After listening to By The Throat, I was hooked for the rest of the year; It was constantly at the top of my play list. I can’t really describe why I like this, and not mainstream rap (oh yea, cause it sucks) but I do. Amazing lyrics, amazing beats…coming from a rap virgin like myself, it really seems to have it all. I have an amazing new appreciation for Hip-H0p and Rap due to this band, and this album. Regardless of your music taste, pick it up.
This album was released in February of 2009. That’s 10 months away from December and our EOTY lists. Even back in February, when I spun A Clear Perception for the first time, I knew it would make the list. The Eyes of a Traitor are one of the most promising metal bands out their to date. Their debut was a complex, emotional and heavy as any great metal album to date. The entire band is under 21, meaning that they are only gonna get better. A Clear Perception is, shall I get generic and say “heavy as fuck”. Guitar work is amazing, as well as drums and, have I forgot to mention vocals? Jack Delany produces some of the most brutal lows you will ever hear. Superb musicianship for such a young band, A Clear Perception is an outstanding piece of music, and I cannot wait until we get more from these young men.
Yup. Chimaira. I’ve had a love hate relationship with Chimaira over my life. I was always a fan, but never ‘loved’ them so to speak. For a few years they would ALWAYS crash concerts I was attending. Not that I didn’t enjoy it, but every show was “And up next…Chimaira!” followed by a flood of the biggest, baddest people you can imagine. It was rough, yet enjoyable. When Infection come out, I decided I’d give it a try, although I had heard some not so good things. People were complaining it was too slow and boring. Boy were they wrong. Taking the tempo down is EXACTLY what this band needed. Infection is 3x as heavy as any previous Chimaira album to date. It will blow your fucking mind. Regardless if your a Chimaira fan, a metal fan, a music fan, or whatever…I don’t care. Give this album a try. Its perfect.
Best Concert of 2009 – Gojira @ The Social
Ive been going to concerts for a pretty long time. In 2008 I averaged about 4 a month. It was pretty brutal. 2009 wasn’t as active for me, and I blame that directly on schoolwork. But I did find time to go see Gojira at The Social in Orlando, Florida. It is very safe to say, and I honestly believe this, that it was the best concert I have, or will ever attend. Now, let me give you some background. To begin, Gojira is one of my all time favorite bands. “Heavy as fuck” doesnt accuratly describe how heavy this band is, its more like “Giant-Flying-Whales-Fighting-Dragons-During-The-Apocalypse-Heavy-As-Fuck”….yeah, thats about accuarte. Anyway, we all have our favorite venue. Mine happens to be The Social in Orlando, FL. It is a very tiny venue that holds say…300 people or so. Well Gojira played there, and I had a ticket, and I went. Concerts will never be the same. Gojira is amazing live and in such a small, intimate setting it was just mind-blowing. I will never experience a show like that again. Priceless.
