The only job Gabriel Garcia, vocalist/guitarist of Black Tide, has ever had is making music. His days are filled with music and the business of music. When he was younger, he was able to spend hours, even days playing guitar and writing songs, but his time is divided now, between the music and industry obligations. Garcia described being a successful musician as, “I absolutely love music and playing guitar, but I enjoy everything else that comes with touring too”. Together with Austin Diaz (guitar), Ronny Gutierrez (Bass), and Cody Paige (drums), he brings Black Tide to the forefront of the hardcore music scene.
Live shows are a collaboration between artist and fans. It may seem that playing the same favorites night after night would become repetitive at times for a band on tour, but Garcia believes the audience is what makes each show unique. He describes it as, “I think it depends on the crowd. Depending on the night, when they (the fans) sing along, you are going to love every single minute of it, no matter what you’re singing”. At their live performance, the four musicians take the stage without introduction and proceed to hit the crowd with energy levels most bands end their sets with. Listeners are immediately encompassed by the music and with each song, audience and artist become partners in the sound.
A natural evolution in the growth of music is not always welcomed by critics or fans. On their new release, Bite the Bullet, Black Tide has added their collective talents to a newer sound. On the song, “Not Afraid” Garcia’s vocals are compelling as he sings, “Don’t ever count me out/You’ll never keep me down/I find strength where there is doubt”. While some may cling to the “old” Black Tide, I would encourage listeners to focus on the innovative guitar pieces featured in the six songs of this collection. Combining original lyrics, driving bass, and perfectly timed drum fills with the signature guitar-heavy Black Tide sound, this album is a culmination of the years spent mastering their craft.
Diversified creativity provides innovative results. Each member of Black Tide has projects independent to the band. This is not to say that Black Tide is unimportant to them, quite the contrary. Side projects often allow creative expression to flow in different directions, bringing new elements into the music of Black Tide. The band has just concluded a headlining tour in the United States and will continue to work on new music for their next release.
