Sometimes I need to crank up club music to drown any thoughts of my day. This week I searched for upbeat singles to relieve any stress from upcoming exams and projects. I usually get that gratification from hardcore rap but this time, the spring season has me picking dance songs. So here are my selections for this week’s 3 Of The Week.
1. “Can’t Hold Us”— Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
As if their hit single “Thrift Shop” didn’t already have us smiling and swooning over this pair, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis attempt to uplift us with this mix of piano-playing, tambourine-shaking, drum-beating awesomeness. The rap adds freshness to an otherwise soulful but fast-paced song. The duo released this one in 2011, but a song this good is worth recovering.
2. “Feel This Moment”— Pitbull (Ft. Christina Aguilera)
Pitbull delivers yet another club banger and sticks to the same motto: live in the present and party hard! Christina Aguilera belts the chorus with her angelic yet powerful voice. After she finishes singing, the beat picks up and Pitbull lets out his signature “Yeeeeee!” This song reflects the Miami rapper’s path to success from little-known 305 resident to self-proclaimed Mr. Worldwide. He recognizes his rapid rise but just wants to take it all in.
3. “Work”— Iggy Azalea
I couldn’t finish off a stressful week without one rap song. Newcomer Iggy Azalea works to impress viewers with this catchy yet reflective single. The native Australian rapper summarizes her teen years in three short phrases: “No money. No family. Sixteen in the middle of Miami.” Azalea acknowledges the struggles she faced as she tried to achieve her dream of becoming a rap artist. It’s a head-bopping tune sure to motivate anyone who thinks his or her goal is unattainable.
