Is there a “song of the summer” this year? Since I cancelled my cable subscription, I’ve been gloriously out of the loop with whatever version of “Blurred Lines” has been played ad nauseaum. I honestly don’t know, I haven’t been out in Pittsburgh’s Southside for a while, but I do find there to be some songs that have been inescapable. So what tunes have I been ruining my hearing with this summer? Well, you’ve all probably come to expect that it’s a bunch of electronica.
1. “Wasted” – Tiesto
I’ve heard a few people tell me that much of EDM has transitioned into pop music, an argument I wouldn’t counter, considering Sirius’s once fantastic BPM station has become the Kiss FM of electronic music. There is, however, one of these tunes that I enjoy very much, especially after seeing it performed live. Tiesto’s “Wasted” may be poppy, but it’s a good party song you can’t resist singing along to.
2. “Rage The Night Away” – Steve Aoki
This is hands down my favorite song to come out this summer. Neon Future may have been delayed but this track alone is enough to tide me over. The build is exceptional and the drop escapes some of the more common elements that have become overdone in the genre. Plus, Waka Flaka Flame continues to win me over with his work here.
3. “Fancy” (Milk N Cookies Remix) – Iggy Azalea
Thanks to a media bombardment of this track, I’ve come to loathe it. Working here and especially in radio, I’m sent all manner of remixes, most of which are indiscernible from the original track. However, these guys are showing some true talent by not only making the song suitable for a proper night club, but so I actually enjoy it very much. Milk N Cookies is something I will be looking out for in the future.
