Hot off of the surprise early digital release of Run The Jewels 3 on December 24th, 2016, Run The Jewels‘ Run The World tour is the holy grail rump shaker tour you need in your life right now. Following up on the massively popular 2014 release of Run The Jewels 2 (and more hilarious Kickstarter-backed remix album Meow The Jewels), El-P and Killer Mike are stronger than ever and delivered the tightest stage performance I’ve seen from them to date.
Throughout the set, El-P and Killer Mike delivered their classic mix of comedic cracks and passionately expressed world beliefs. At one point, El-P joked about leaving RTJ to embark on a slam poetry career as a transition into “Panther Like A Panther.” A few songs later, the duo discussed how they wish more women were in positions of global power and their concern over the Trump administration.
The show was opened by Nick Hook, Boo Cuz and Gaslamp Killer. Gaslamp in particular delivered a great DJ set with interlaced stories about his heritage and family history, alongside a number of insane 8-bit covers including: Chamillionaire’s “Riding Dirty,” Ludacris’ “Fantasy,” and the Legend of Zelda theme song.
