It is very rare for me to say that I did not enjoy a concert or the musicians playing up on the stage, although on April 7th when I saw the Crystal Fighters perform at the Black Cat in Washington DC they managed to be one of these far and few between occasions. The opening band, machineheart, were the best part of the entire evening with vocals from lead vocalist Stevie Scott left me in awe at the power of her voice. After machineheart played, I was very confused as the crew began setting up for the main act as vines and flowers covered the stage alongside many instruments that one usually doesn’t see. Once the band took the stage the smile dropped from my face immediately, something didn’t feel right with all of their outfits and the fact that they were all very, very white. The lead singer looked stoned out of his mind and kept fluttering this grass bundle at the crowd as he sang causing everyone to rush forward whenever the bundle got close to them, it all felt very cult-like to me. Don’t get me wrong, I can see how people can enjoy the music and the atmosphere of a show like that, it personally just was not for me at all and I left before they had finished their set.
