Oh, 5 Seconds of Summer. Don’t think we can’t see your attempts at trying to make your music sound like that of your inspirations All Time Low, Mayday Parade and Green Day. While I personally commend you for trying to break out of the boy band bubble that you were placed in since you toured with One Direction, it’s a little difficult for the rest of the music community to accept that you want a change. Your new single “She’s Kinda Hot” has strong potential to become that angsty pop punk hit you so desire, but your desire to change is probably giving all your tween fangirls whiplash if they’re also fans of 1D.
Instrumentation-wise, the band has a clear crossover between Weezer‘s “Pork N Beans” and My Chemical Romance‘s “Teenagers” and gives their fans a more in-depth look as to what kind of music they actually want to put out. “She’s Kinda Hot” is sassy, energetic and a clear earworm anthem that pulls from New Politics‘ handbook.
What really proves to the listener that they’re trying to move towards a different, more ‘pop-punk’ direction lies within their lyrics. Multiple people in their lives, which includes their hot girlfriends (“my girlfriend’s bitchin’ cause I always sleep in/she’s always screaming when she’s calling her friends”), their shrinks (my shrink is telling me I’ve got crazy dreams/she’s also saying I’ve got low self-esteem”) and even their neighbors (“my neighbor told me I’ve got bad brains”) have pretty much told them that they don’t have a whole lot going for them no matter how optimistic they are. Lines like “when you’ve got bigger plans/that no one else understands/you’ve got a shot though” and especially in its chorus prove that they are very worthy of all the praise they’ve received from Alternative Press and their desired scene.
I truly do commend 5 Seconds Of Summer to take a more angsty approach to their music because they’ve mentioned many a time that pop-punk is where there hearts lie. However, “She’s Kinda Hot” is a tad over-the-top in the ‘not-wanting-to-be-labeled-a-boy-band-anymore’ scheme and comes across as trying too hard. Plus, the song title is a bit misleading since it’s more of an angsty ‘don’t-let-people-constantly-put-you-and-your-dreams-down’ track than an ‘I’m-gonna-bitch-about-my-hot-girlfriend-who-bitches-about-me’ track, in which the latter theme is only referenced at the beginning of the song. Overall, “She’s Kinda Hot” is a fun anthem that will certainly gain a high amount of radio airplay. We will see where the rest of 5SoS’s upcoming album will go – that pop-rock/boy band-y stuff we’re already used to from them, or in a more pop-punk direction.
