Have you ever had a moment where you were thinking of someone, and out of the blue that person presents themselves to you (either physically or by communication)? Ever been somewhere and you hit it off with someone who is completely right for you…at least in that moment in time? Canadian singer-songwriter Alanna Clarke definitely knows how you feel in her sultry new single “Linger.” As a newcomer in the game, Clarke showcases her unique vocal talent and pairs it with musical storytelling that not only makes you relate to her, but also makes the listener lose themselves in the scenario that she portrays.
Clarke has described “Linger” as a “low-fi rough track with some grungy bass and drums” that very much incorporates her belief that “some things are meant to be…” and the idea of “communicating mind to mind without really knowing it.” It can even simply take on another life with the theme of the chase – you want to say ‘yes’ to this absolutely amazing person, but you also want to control yourself. Does she want to give in only to be told “I told you so…” by someone who cares deeply for her well-being? “Linger” is a complete mystery and Clarke certainly knows how to capture her audience’s attention with the elegant wordplay of this track that can have numerous connotations.
“Linger started out with this that I wrote the verse and chorus ideas over,” Alanna explained. “I brought it into the studio to show my producers and they immediately understood the vibe. We wrote the rest of the song together that day. I believe and I kept getting signs or reminders of this person I used to see. You know how sometimes you think of someone randomly and then they call you later that day? I had the feeling that is what was going on, that maybe I was being thought of so I kept getting these signs. I got a feeling… and now I know. Those reminders were more than a coincidence.”
The musical quality of “Linger” rivals that of soulful starlets Lana Del Rey, Skylar Grey, and Banks in the most complementary ways possible. The infusion of R&B baby making songs and seductive pop beats, muddled with a hint of radio friendly indie-alternative that gives this track the star quality that puts her ahead of the game. Clarke entrances us into walking alongside her in a moment that inspired the track. A slightly distorted “and now I know”-s signify the war she’s in with herself to give into the temptation that ‘linger’s around this person who’s successfully charmed her.
Alanna Clarke’s “Linger” has all the potential to become a staple in the secret playlists that lovers may be playing in the background of their romantic activities. It is the definition of a modern seductive track that can add to the emotions playing out on a screen, as well as bring to life a tale of hearts tied together that listeners can be a part of on an experiential level. Clarke’s music is mature beyond her years, proving that she is in this for the long haul.
