Metalcore band Architects has recently sparked a lot of controversy with the release of their newest single “Broken Cross” off of their sixth studio album Lost Forever // Lost Together “. The inevitable discussion about whether or not the band is labeling themselves as a Christian metalcore band at the simple mention of God has begun. Several people, myself included, do not see it that way. It seems that the song is not talking about how humans must repent for their sins, but describing a God-forsaken world. In no way does the band appear to be spreading any Christian messages, rather a simple critique of humanity.
When I read the lyrics to the song I was pretty pleased. I consider myself to be more of a secular person, but it’s always interesting to see the mention of God in songs. This adds to the idea that metalcore is not a genre plagued by Satanists as many people tend to believe. “Broken Cross” is definitely a darker song, as should be expected. This album is said to be on the heavier side to provide songs that are great for live shows. As an Architects fan, I was happy to see the band’s reference to their third album Hollow Crown in this track: “A f*cking tyrant in a hollow crown.”
Lyrics aside, I really quite liked the song. The introduction slowly intensifies, which perfectly sets up the angrily screamed first line, “God only knows why we were born to burn.” This verse transitions into some clean vocals that express desperation, which clearly sets the tone for the song. While the fast-paced instrumentals also set this tone, I was a bit disappointed to hear them. The song doesn’t necessarily provide anything innovative through the instrumentals. The incessant breakdowns have been done to death and while they’re good for a metalcore track, they’re nothing special. It would have been nice to hear something different as the message that the song sends is a relatively new one.
After hearing both “Naysayer” and “Broken Cross”, it’s pretty safe to say that I’m excited to hear Lost Forever // Lost Together. Vocalist Sam Carter has been quoted as saying that this is the hardest the band has ever worked on a record. I can’t wait to hear what new things Architects has in store for fans.
