Wikipedia has informed me that Russian Circles are an instrumental post-rock band from Chicago. They’ve just uploaded the title track from their forthcoming LP Memorial and in a word, WOW. How have I never heard of these guys before? “Memorial” (the song, not the album) took me on a captivating journey through multiple iterations of existence, guided by the glorious, haunting voice of guest vocalist Chelsea Wolfe.
Seriously, holy shit. I normally scoff at bands who label themselves as ‘progressive’ because that implies they’re ahead of the curve in some way. How can you be ahead of the curve if there are literally millions of other people doing exactly what you’re doing, but better? I’m looking at you, Old Man Gloom!
Sorry, got distracted. Yeah, I have ADHD (I know, big surprise) and I normally can’t concentrate on anything for any length of time. “Memorial” had me engrossed by virtue of the sheer scope of its compositional majesty. It took me on a journey to an alternate dimension where everything is liquefied, theoretical and ethereal and left me simultaneously disoriented and begging for more, all within three and a bit minutes.
What I’m trying to say is that “Memorial” is amazing. I’m going to buy the shit out of the album and you should, too.
