While everyone is waiting for ‘extremely soon’ to happen, Childish Gambino just keeps teasing us. After dropping a handful of new tracks on us via a recent live performance, Donald Glover goes straight for the heart of the same machine that arguably had the biggest hand in propelling him to where he is right now. “Fuck Your Blog” isn’t really a stab at everyone, but with lines like ‘Okay, we da fanboys, sex fantasies with androids,’ it really isn’t hard to tell that he’s going straight for the haters here.
A simple, vocal-looped titular quip is the base for this beat, which as far as Gambino goes is pretty solid to be fair. It isn’t soaked in instrumentation or electro-melodies, but in its simplicity lies the subliminal pounding of toms and the flat-out message of this track. Though Gambino goes last in the trio’s rather short sub-2:30 outing, Flynt and Humma bring two different sides to the sound. Not only do they approach the words different, but the vocal differences help this track spread its wings of spite quite effortlessly. That being said, Flynt sets the tone well even if his rapping skills lag a bit behind the other two, while Humma brings a smooth flow that counters the blunt beat with nice contrast. Gambino’s veering back and forth from punchlines, instead of relying on them, makes this an interesting verse from him. Once the mixtape drops, it will be interesting to see how it is Gambino decides to portray himself both in his writing and how he is rapping considering the veering towards more “You See Me”-type lyricism in songs like “We Flexin'”.
While not absolutely stunning across the board, this is simply another solid track to hold us over for whenever the mixtape comes. Perhaps another sign of where Childish is headed, “Fuck Your Blog” is an interesting statement for him to make regardless of what kind of spite is being thrown his way. In any case, let’s hope him releasing this now means what is on the mixtape will be that much better.
